"Dancers"
An Exhibition of Drawings and Prints by
Milein Cosman
November 24 - December 20, 2009
The dancers in this exhibition were drawn between 1946 and 1970. While best known for her portraiture, Milein Cosman has always concentrated on character and movement in her work, and loves to capture her subjects in 'mid-flight'.
Cosman was educated in Düsseldorf and Geneva before coming to England in 1939 to study at the Slade School of Art (based in Oxford during the war).
Her work is in several leading collections including:
The National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Hunterian Museum, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

"Wildlife, Myth and Folklore" An Exhibition of Paintings at the New End Gallery
October 6 - November 15, 2009
Celia Ward's pictures are beautiful. Whether it's her little egrets in their natural habitat at Stiffkey Marsh or wild violets in the wetlands, her pictures are more than just field guide illustrations but rather images that transport you into an enchanting world. Working in watercolour, tempera and gold she tells you stories of wildlife, myth and folklore, creating pictures of birds in flight, St. George and the Dragon, Romanian shamans and an alphabet gloriously belonging to the same ancient European tradition of manuscript illumination as the Book of Kells.
Celia was born into a painting family in Kent. She studied her craft in this milieu, and at the Royal Academy Schools in London. She read History at University College, London. In 1983 she won the Richard Ford Travel Award to draw at the Prado in Madrid. Her pictures are in a number of collections including The Ashmolean Museum, The Faringdon Collection, The H.R.H. Prince of Wales Collection, The Brinsley Ford Collection, Balliol College (Oxford), Corpus Christi College (Cambridge).

'LIFEWORKS'
July 14 - August 2, 2009
Marise Hepworth was an extraordinary artist. She was masterly, courageous, took huge risks, creating some of the most exciting pictures I've seen. Not a single picture is dull or lifeless but full of energy and inquisitiveness. She worked many hours a day perfecting her skill in her studio in Hampstead and on the Heath nearby, experimenting in different media from Chinese wash, aquatint and pastels on paper to working in wood, stone and bronze. She was a painter, a sculptor and a poet.
Marise trained in Fine Art and History of Art at the City and Guilds School of Art, where she graduated with an Honours degree and won the school's History of Art prize in 1995. She returned in 1998 to take her MA in Fine Art, winning the pretigious Norman Ackroyd Award for print making in 2002.
The 'Lifeworks' exhibition at the New End Gallery from the 14th of July to the 2nd of August is a show not to be missed, particularly, if you love pictures that are brave, honest, exhilarating and full life.
