Sophie MacCarthy's work is exquisite. You could be peering into a rockpool full of swimming fish, gazing at birds peeping out of tall grass or holding a glorious jar of swirling autumn leaves. She is the granddaughter of literary critic Sir Desmond MacCarthy and grew up surrounded by the paintings and decorative arts of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell.

In the artist's own words:

"All my pots are thrown. When they are dry I paint a range of coloured slips over stencils and wax resist, overlapping colours to produce greater tonal depth.

Currently, inspiration comes from looking at the ground ie: leaves and stalks. Birds also feature quite often in my work."
